In Response to Mayor Wheeler’s Proposed Budget

Contact: Daryl Turner, President
Portland Police Association

Portland, OR, April 30, 2018 – Today, Mayor Wheeler announced his proposed 2018-2019 budget that increases the Portland Police Bureau’s (PPB) authorized sworn staffing level from 946 to 1,004.

“This is a first step towards addressing the systemic inadequate staffing issue in the Bureau,” said Daryl Turner, President of the Portland Police Association (PPA). “This is a move in the right direction to reach PPB’s primary goals: responding to calls for service in a timely manner, investigating crimes, proactively policing our neighborhoods, and continuing to build on the community policing model established in the 1990s.”

In the years to come, this organization faces record retirements that will need to be addressed in future budget years. Turner added, “As President of the PPA, I am hopeful that the rest of City Council will continue to work with the Mayor and Chief Outlaw towards long-term solutions for the Police Bureau’s staffing crisis.”
