I want to first take the time to thank you for your hard work, dedication, and selflessness during these unprecedented times. As everyone has to adapt to our new normal, each of you continues to put your own health and your family’s well-being in jeopardy by going to work every day to protect and serve our community. We at the PPA are humbled to be at your service.
Daily we are learning more about COVID-19 and how it spreads, and now we’re hearing that even mere conversation interactions with others may spread respiratory droplets. Consider wearing PPE, like a mask and gloves, when on shift and interacting with others. I have been reassured by Chief Resch and each Precinct Commander that there is a limited supply of N-95 masks available at each precinct for your protection. If you need an N-95 mask or any other PPE contact your supervisor immediately and they will issue the proper safety equipment.
In addition, a new federal COVID-19 sick and family law went into effect on April 1st (the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA). The federal law allows employers to exclude emergency responders from the paid leave benefits. However, the PPA is actively working with the City to ensure that it will extend these paid leave benefits to the PPA’s police and dispatch members. The PPA has issued a bargaining demand to the City to sort out the details of how the paid COVID-19 leave benefits will work. We will keep you updated on our progress.
Finally, KOIN news recently issued a story about rapid COVID-19 testing for first responders:
Legacy Rapid Testing
Legacy-GOhealth Urgent Care is now using the rapid COVID-19 test at its clinics in Oregon and Washington.
The test can confirm infection in just 5-15 minutes. The curbside tests will be done by appointment only and will be prioritized for frontline medical staff and first responders.
If you believe you have COVID-19, you can schedule a virtual video visit. A medical professional will let you know if you need to be tested.
You can take a self-assessment online here: https://legacy-c19.smartexam.com/patient/covidregister/
If further COVID-19 testing is needed, the self-assessment will take you to a phone number or web conference with a Legacy Health Professional to set up the next steps, which may include curbside rapid testing with priority for first responders. There are no out-of-pocket costs for COVID-19 testing.
If you have been exposed to someone known to have COVID-19 or you have COVID-19 symptoms, then you should do two things:
- Seek medical advice within 48 hours of either known exposure or the development of symptoms, and then follow through within a reasonable time for testing for COVID-19 if recommended by your medical provider. (Note that COVID-19 testing is free under the PPA health plans.)
- File a purple packet (FPDR) or a risk management claim (worker’s comp)
Stay safe out there. As always, we’re available 24/7.
